What Happens When You Boil Water for 20 Minutes?

Boiling water is one of the oldest and most reliable methods for making it safer to drink—especially when you're unsure about its source. But what exactly happens if you keep that pot on the stove for a full 20 minutes?

For one, boiling for this long goes beyond just killing bacteria and pathogens, which are typically neutralized within a few minutes of reaching a rolling boil. The extended time comes into play when dealing with chemical contaminants—specifically chlorine. While municipalities add chlorine to disinfect tap water, some people find its taste and smell unpleasant. Boiling water for around 20 minutes can effectively remove free chlorine, as the heat accelerates its evaporation from the water.

However, there's an important limit to this process. Not all chlorine compounds are so easily removed. When chlorine reacts with organic matter in water, it forms what are known as disinfection byproducts (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. These compounds are more stable and do not vanish with boiling. In fact, because boiling reduces the water volume through evaporation, the concentration of these byproducts can actually increase slightly.

DBPs are among the most common contaminants found in city water systems and have been linked to potential long-term health concerns with prolonged exposure. That’s why if you’re aiming to reduce these substances, boiling alone won’t help—filtration methods like activated carbon filters or reverse osmosis are more effective.

So while a 20-minute boil can improve the taste of tap water by removing chlorine, it’s not a complete purification solution. For truly cleaner water, especially from municipal sources, combining boiling with proper filtration makes a more meaningful difference.
