Getting Your PPS Number: What You Need for Proof of Identity
Applying for a Personal Public Service (PPS) number in Ireland requires official documentation to verify your identity. Fortunately, the Department of Social Protection accepts several standard forms of identification depending on your background and residency status.
If you are an Irish or European citizen, a current passport or an Irish Birth Certificate is widely accepted. Alternatively, a valid driver's license or a national identity card from your home country can serve as your primary proof.
For non-EU nationals living in Ireland, your residency status plays a key role. You can use an Irish Residency Permit (IRP) card or a GNIB card featuring specific permissions, such as Stamp 4, Stamp 4 EU FAM, Stamp 5, or Stamp 6. Additionally, individuals with recognized refugee status can apply, provided their status remains valid for at least the next six months.
Having the correct document ready before you start your application ensures a smooth and hassle-free process.
