Yes, ibuprofen can effectively help close a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), particularly in premature infants. The ductus arteriosus is a vital blood vessel during fetal development, connecting the pulmonary artery to the aorta and allowing blood to bypass the lungs. After birth, this vessel typically closes on its own. However, in some preterm babies, it remains open—a condition known as PDA—which can lead to breathing difficulties and strain on the heart.
Ibuprofen plays a key role in closing the PDA by targeting the body's production of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that keep the ductus open. By inhibiting these prostaglandins, ibuprofen promotes the natural closure of the vessel. This mechanism is similar to that of indomethacin, another drug traditionally used for the same purpose.
