How Is a Patent Ductus Arteriosus Treated?

When a baby is born, a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus, which was essential during fetal life, usually closes on its own within a few days. But sometimes, it remains open—a condition known as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). While small PDAs may not cause major issues and can close over time, larger ones often require treatment to prevent complications like heart failure or poor growth.

The first line of treatment often involves medication, especially in premature infants. Drugs like ibuprofen or indomethacin can help close the PDA by affecting blood vessel function. These medications are most effective when given early and are typically used before considering more invasive approaches.

If medication doesn’t work—or if the PDA is too large—doctors may recommend a procedure. One option is open-heart surgery, where the vessel is closed through an incision between the ribs. While effective, this method requires general anesthesia and a longer recovery time.

Today, many patients are treated with a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure, such as the Amplatzer™ Duct Occluder. In this approach, a small device is inserted through a blood vessel in the leg and guided to the heart, where it blocks the PDA. This method avoids chest incisions, reduces recovery time, and is typically performed under sedation rather than full anesthesia.

The best treatment depends on the patient’s age, overall health, and the size of the PDA. Pediatric cardiologists carefully evaluate each case to determine whether medication, a catheter procedure, or surgery offers the safest and most effective outcome. With proper care, most children with PDA go on to live healthy, active lives.
