Microbial Mats vs. Biofilms: More Than Just Thickness

At first glance, microbial mats and biofilms might seem like two sides of the same coin—both are communities of microorganisms living together in a slimy matrix. But dig a little deeper, and the differences become clear, especially when it comes to structure and complexity.

Biofilms are common in both natural and human-made environments—from your teeth to the inside of water pipes. They’re typically thin, often just one to several cells thick, and made up of a few microbial species sticking to a surface. These slimy layers are tough, resilient, and can be a real nuisance when they form on medical devices or industrial equipment.

On the other hand, microbial mats are something of a microbial metropolis. Ranging from several millimeters to over a centimeter in thickness, these layered communities are far more complex. They’re not just thicker—they’re vertically stratified, meaning different layers host different kinds of microbes, each playing a specific role based on factors like light penetration and oxygen levels. Think of it like a city with specialized neighborhoods: photosynthetic bacteria might live near the top, while anaerobic species dwell in the oxygen-free zones below.

These mats are often found in extreme environments—hot springs, salt flats, or ancient seafloors—where their layered structure allows for a tightly coordinated flow of energy and nutrients. In fact, some of the oldest fossils on Earth are from microbial mats, showing just how foundational they’ve been in shaping life on this planet.

So while both biofilms and microbial mats are examples of microbes thriving together, the mat is the more advanced, structured cousin—less of a coating and more of an ecosystem.
