The Production Process of Acrylic Fiber
Acrylic fiber is a synthetic material known for its lightweight, soft, and wool-like feel. Creating it is a fascinating chemical journey that starts with precise raw ingredients.
The core building block is acrylonitrile, which must make up at least 85 percent of the polymer. This substance is combined—or copolymerized—with other compounds like methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, or vinyl acetate to improve the fiber's dyeability and texture.
Once the ingredients are ready, the actual polymerization process begins. This mainly happens in one of two ways: either through solvent polymerization using specialized solvents like dimethylformamide (DMF) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), or via emulsion polymerization in water.
After the polymer is formed, it is transformed into actual fibers through a spinning technique (usually wet-spinning or dry-spinning), washed, stretched to increase strength, and finally crimped to mimic the natural warmth and loft of wool.
