Understanding Type 2 Surge Protection
When it comes to safeguarding electrical systems, surge protection isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. It's layered, and type 2 protection plays a critical role in that defense strategy. Installed at the main distribution board—typically after a type 1 surge protective device (SPD)—type 2 protection handles the second stage of defense against voltage surges.
While type 1 SPDs are designed to take the brunt of massive surges, like those from direct lightning strikes, they don’t eliminate the threat entirely. Some residual overvoltage still passes through. That’s where type 2 comes in. It further limits this remaining surge voltage, ensuring that sensitive equipment—like computers, HVAC systems, and industrial controls—aren’t exposed to damaging spikes.
These devices are especially effective against surges generated internally, such as those caused by switching operations in the power grid or large motors cycling on and off. Without proper protection, these transients can degrade components over time or cause sudden failures.
Type 2 SPDs are commonly found in both residential and commercial settings, often integrated into breaker panels. They’re tested under standardized conditions (like the 8/20 µs current wave) to ensure reliable performance when needed most.
Think of it this way: if type 1 protection is the heavy-duty shield stopping the initial blow, type 2 is the armor underneath, catching what gets through and keeping the system safe. Together, they form a coordinated defense—one that’s essential in modern electrical installations where reliability and equipment longevity matter.
