What Is Type 7 Plastic? Unpacking the Mystery of "OTHER"
When you turn a plastic container over and see a recycling symbol with the number 7 inside, you’re looking at what’s known as Type 7 plastic. Unlike the more common types 1 through 6, which include familiar materials like PET and HDPE, Type 7 is a catch-all category labeled simply as “OTHER.” This means it covers a variety of less common or mixed plastics that don’t fit into the previous groups.
Among the most well-known materials in this category are polycarbonates (often abbreviated as PC). These are tough, durable plastics used to make products that need to be both strong and transparent—think water bottles, food storage containers, and even eyeglass lenses. Polycarbonates are prized for their resilience and clarity, making them ideal for high-performance uses.
However, Type 7 isn't just about polycarbonates. It can also include bioplastics made from plant-based materials, composite plastics, or blends that mix different resin types. This diversity makes Type 7 plastics trickier to recycle. Many municipal recycling programs don’t accept them due to the complexity of sorting and processing.
Another concern with some polycarbonates is the potential presence of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that has raised health concerns in food-contact items. As a result, many manufacturers now offer “BPA-free” versions made with alternative resins, still falling under the Type 7 umbrella.
While Type 7 plastics offer unique benefits in strength and versatility, their recycling challenges mean consumers should pay close attention to local guidelines. When possible, reusing or choosing alternatives can be a smarter, more sustainable choice.
