Chemical Safety: What Never to Mix with Sulfuric Acid

Working with concentrated chemicals requires extreme caution, and sulfuric acid is no exception. As one of the most potent mineral acids, it can react violently when brought into contact with incompatible substances, posing severe hazards in both laboratory and industrial settings.

The most dangerous combination involves mixing concentrated sulfuric acid with a strong base, such as sodium hydroxide. When a strong acid meets a strong base, an intense exothermic neutralization reaction occurs. This rapid release of heat can cause the liquid to boil instantly, resulting in violent liquid explosions, splatter, and severe chemical burns.

While reactions involving diluted or weak substances are generally milder, mixing highly concentrated acids and bases dramatically amplifies the risk. To ensure safety, these reactive chemical groups must always be kept strictly separated and handled with proper precautions.
