Simple Household Items to Fight Moisture

Excess moisture in the bathroom or closet can lead to musty smells and even mold if left unchecked. But before turning to expensive dehumidifiers, consider what you might already have at home. Common items like black tea, baking soda, and silica gel are surprisingly effective at absorbing dampness from the air.

Black tea contains natural tannins and has drying properties, making it great for pulling moisture out of the environment. Baking soda is a well-known odor absorber and also tackles humidity, while silica gel—the little beads you often find in new shoeboxes or packaging—is specifically designed to keep things dry by trapping water vapor.

The trick is to use them right. Simply place any of these materials inside a small, breathable fabric pouch—like cotton or muslin—and position it in damp areas, such as your bathroom, under the sink, or inside a storage cabinet. For baking soda, you can leave it in an open container on a shelf, though a pouch helps it blend in more naturally. Replace every few weeks or when you notice condensation returning.

These solutions are not only affordable but also eco-friendly and safe to keep around the house. Plus, reusing leftover tea leaves or baking soda gives new life to everyday items. Silica gel packets can even be reactivated by drying them in the oven at a low temperature, allowing you to reuse them multiple times.

While they won’t replace a dehumidifier in extremely damp conditions, these little helpers make a noticeable difference in mildly humid spaces. Sometimes, the best fixes are the simplest—and already in your pantry.
