Supplements Seniors Should Approach with Caution
As we age, our nutritional needs change, and many older adults turn to dietary supplements to support their health. However, not all supplements are safe or necessary, and some can pose serious health risks for seniors.
A major concern is excess vitamin A. While it is an essential nutrient, high intakes in older adults can weaken bones over time, significantly increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
Another nutrient to monitor closely is vitamin B6. Although often taken for energy or cognitive support, consuming it in excess can lead to nerve damage, resulting in troublesome neurological problems such as balance issues and peripheral neuropathy.
Furthermore, popular herbal supplements like garlic, ginger, ginkgo, and ginseng can interact unpredictably with medications. For seniors taking blood thinners, these herbs can dangerously increase the risk of bleeding.
Before adding any new vitamin, mineral, or herbal product to a daily routine, seniors and their caregivers should always consult a doctor or pharmacist to ensure safety and prevent harmful interactions.
