What Being Genetically "Neanderthal" Might Say About You

It might sound like science fiction, but traces of Neanderthal DNA live on in many of us—especially those of non-African descent. While we’re Homo sapiens, our ancestors interbred with Neanderthals tens of thousands of years ago, leaving behind fragments of their genetic code in modern humans. Scientists have found that these ancient genetic variants aren’t just neutral leftovers—they may influence how we look, feel, and function today.

Research suggests that Neanderthal DNA could play a role in a surprising range of traits. Some variants are linked to how our bodies process fats, affecting lipid metabolism and potentially influencing cholesterol levels or fat storage. Others appear to shape our immune response, possibly helping early humans fight off new pathogens as they moved into Eurasia. Of course, having Neanderthal DNA doesn’t mean you’re destined for a particular trait—these effects are subtle and depend on a complex mix of genes and environment. But it’s fascinating to think that, in small but measurable ways, a bit of the ancient past still shapes who we are today.
