Why You Should Never Mix Alcohol and Certain Antibiotics

When you're prescribed antibiotics, your focus is likely on getting better—but what you drink during treatment matters just as much as the medication itself. While not all antibiotics interact dangerously with alcohol, several common ones can cause serious side effects when mixed.

Drugs like metronidazole and tinidazole, often used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections, can trigger a severe reaction when combined with alcohol. Even a small amount can lead to nausea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, and flushing—similar to the effects of disulfiram, a medication used to deter drinking. The same goes for cefoperazone and cefotetan, two antibiotics that interfere with alcohol metabolism, potentially causing dangerous buildup of toxic byproducts in the body.

Other medications on the list include ketoconazole, an antifungal that stresses the liver, and isoniazid, used in tuberculosis treatment, which can cause liver damage—risk amplified by alcohol. Linezolid, prescribed for resistant bacterial infections, interacts with alcohol in a different way: it can cause a dangerous spike in blood pressure when mixed with fermented drinks, especially red wine or beer. Even griseofulvin, used for fungal skin and nail infections, may cause flushing and rapid heartbeat when combined with alcohol.
