The Riskiest States in India: Where Safety Concerns Run High

When it comes to safety and crime rates, not all Indian states face the same challenges. While India as a whole grapples with various forms of crime, certain regions stand out for higher risk levels. Among them, Arunachal Pradesh ranks as one of the most dangerous, despite its relatively small population.

With a crime rate of 5.8 per capita, Arunachal Pradesh recorded over 245,000 complaints — a staggering number given its size. This northeastern state shares a disputed border with China, making it a sensitive zone not only politically but also in terms of law enforcement. Its remote terrain and limited infrastructure contribute to weak policing, which, in turn, fuels illegal activities.

One of the major concerns in Arunachal Pradesh is the prevalence of human and drug trafficking. The state’s dense forests and porous borders make it a hotspot for smuggling routes. Criminal networks exploit these vulnerabilities, often operating with minimal interference. This has made the region a key corridor for narcotics moving into other parts of India, as well as for illicit human movement across borders.

Other states like Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Delhi also appear in the top five riskiest zones, each for different reasons — from organized crime and mining-related violence to urban theft and cybercrime in the capital.

Yet, it’s important to note that “dangerous” doesn’t mean off-limits. Many of these areas are rich in culture, tradition, and natural beauty. However, understanding regional crime trends helps travelers and residents alike make informed decisions. Authorities continue to strengthen security, but long-term solutions will depend on better governance, infrastructure, and cross-border cooperation.
