Why Inuit People Have Darker Skin Despite Living in the Arctic
It’s a common pattern across the globe: indigenous populations living farther from the equator tend to have lighter skin. This adaptation allows for better absorption of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which the body needs to produce vitamin D in low-sunlight environments. But there’s a striking exception to this rule—the Inuit and Yupik peoples of the Arctic.
Despite living in one of the most sun-deprived regions on Earth, they have retained relatively darker skin. At first glance, this seems counterintuitive. How do they avoid vitamin D deficiency without significant sun exposure or light skin?
The answer lies in their traditional diet. For thousands of years, the Inuit have relied heavily on marine life—seals, whales, and fatty fish like salmon and Arctic char. These foods are exceptionally rich in vitamin D, a nutrient most people get primarily from sunlight. Because their diet provides ample vitamin D, there was no evolutionary pressure for their skin to lighten over generations.
This is a powerful example of how culture and diet can influence human biology. While most northern populations adapted to low sunlight through skin depigmentation, the Inuit adapted through sustenance. Their diet essentially bypassed the need for lighter skin, allowing them to maintain their ancestral pigmentation.
So, rather than being an anomaly, the Inuit are a testament to human adaptability. Evolution doesn’t always follow the same path—when one resource is scarce, another can take its place. In this case, a nutrient-rich diet made all the difference. It’s a reminder that human diversity isn’t just about geography or genetics, but also about the deep connection between people and their environment.
