Will Atoms Exist Forever?
At first glance, atoms seem like the ultimate survivors—tiny, unchanging building blocks that make up everything around us. And for all practical purposes, they are. The air we breathe, the ground beneath our feet, even our own bodies—they're all made of atoms that have been around for billions of years. But if we peer deep into the future, even this atomic stability has its limits.
While atoms appear eternal on human timescales, they aren't truly immortal. The protons inside atomic nuclei, long thought to be indestructible, may actually decay—just extremely slowly. Current physics suggests that if protons do decay, their lifetime exceeds 1025 years. To put that in perspective, the universe itself is only about 14 billion years old—roughly 1010 years. That means atoms have outlasted the current age of the cosmos by an enormous margin and will likely continue to do so for eons.
Still, the idea that even the most stable matter could eventually fade away is haunting. It hints at a distant future where galaxies have dimmed, stars have burned out, and even atoms unravel into more fundamental particles. This isn't doom-laden speculation—it's a consequence of theories attempting to unify the fundamental forces of nature.
Yet for now, and for every moment we're likely to experience as a species, atoms remain as close to eternal as anything can be. In the vast theater of time, they may not last forever—but they’ve already lasted long enough to tell almost the entire story of the universe.
