How to Identify Stromatolites

Stromatolites are among the most ancient fossils on Earth, offering a rare glimpse into early life. These layered structures are primarily composed of limestone and formed over billions of years through the activity of blue-green algae—more accurately known as cyanobacteria. These microscopic, one-celled organisms thrived in shallow water environments, trapping sediment and secreting calcium carbonate, which over time built up into distinctive layered formations.

One of the most telling features of stromatolites is their finely banded appearance. Look for thin, alternating light and dark layers—these represent cycles of microbial growth and sediment accumulation. Unlike random rock strata, these layers often form smooth, wavy, or dome-shaped patterns that resemble cauliflower heads or broad mounds. In some cases, they appear flat, while others rise into hummocky structures, shaped by water flow and microbial activity.

While they can resemble other sedimentary structures at first glance, stromatolites are unique in their biological origin. True stromatolites are not just mineral deposits—they’re fossilized records of ancient life. The oldest known specimens date back over 3.5 billion years, making them some of the earliest evidence of life on our planet.

Today, living stromatolites can still be found in a few rare locations, like Shark Bay in Western Australia, where conditions mimic Earth’s early oceans. Finding one in the rock record is like uncovering a page from the planet’s earliest history books—a quiet testament to the persistence of life in even its most primitive forms.
