Does Water Evaporate Faster in a Dry Room?

If you have ever watched a puddle disappear on a scorching afternoon or noticed how quickly wet clothes dry when you hang them up inside, you have witnessed evaporation in action. One of the biggest factors determining just how fast this happens is the moisture already present in the air around us, known as relative humidity.

The short answer is yes: water evaporates significantly faster in a dry room. To understand why, think of the air as a giant sponge that can only hold a specific amount of invisible water vapor at any given temperature. When a room is very dry, that air sponge has plenty of room to absorb more moisture. Because there is a large gap between the amount of vapor currently in the air and its maximum capacity, water molecules escaping from a liquid surface find plenty of open space to move into, driving up the evaporation rate.

On the flip side, in a humid room, the air is already close to saturation—meaning the "sponge" is nearly full. With so much moisture crowded into the surrounding space, it is much harder for new liquid molecules to break free and stay airborne. Molecules keep bouncing back into the liquid just as fast as they try to leave, causing the entire process to slow down dramatically.
