Why Blood Type O Might Mean a Tougher Battle with Cholera
It’s a question that has puzzled scientists for years: do certain blood types influence how sick we get? The answer, at least in the case of cholera, appears to be yes—especially if you have blood type O.
People with blood type O are not only more likely to contract cholera, but they often experience more severe symptoms compared to those with other blood types. For decades, this pattern was observed but poorly understood. Now, research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has shed light on the biological mechanism behind it.
Scientists discovered that in individuals with blood type O, the cholera toxin triggers a chain reaction in the cells lining the intestine. Specifically, the toxin hyperactivates a crucial signaling molecule called L-type calcium channels, leading to excessive secretion of fluids—a hallmark of cholera’s devastating diarrhea. This overreaction appears to be tied to subtle differences in the surface chemistry of intestinal cells based on blood type.
Because blood type is determined by specific sugars on red blood cells—and also found on other cells, including those in the gut—these molecular variations may create a more welcoming environment for the cholera bacterium in type O individuals. The result? A faster, more intense illness.
This finding doesn’t mean people with blood type O are generally more prone to all infections. In fact, some studies suggest they may have advantages against other diseases, such as a lower risk of severe malaria. But when it comes to cholera, their biology may work against them.
Understanding this link could help in developing better treatments or preventive strategies, especially in regions where cholera is common. For now, it’s a powerful reminder that something as simple as blood type can play a surprisingly complex role in how our bodies respond to disease.
