Do Your Ears Sweat? Here’s What’s Really Happening

You’ve probably never thought about it, but yes—your ears can "sweat," in a way. It’s not quite like sweating on your palms or forehead, but the process is more interesting than you’d expect.

Inside your ear canals, two types of glands play a key role: sebaceous glands and ceruminous glands. The sebaceous glands are attached to tiny hair follicles and release an oily substance called sebum. This natural oil helps keep the skin in your ears moisturized and prevents dryness or irritation. Think of it as your body’s built-in lotion for delicate inner-ear tissue.

Then there are the ceruminous glands—these are actually modified sweat glands, unique to the ear canal. Unlike regular sweat glands elsewhere on your body, these don’t cool you down. Instead, they team up with sebaceous glands to produce earwax, also known as cerumen. This waxy substance traps dust, repels insects, and protects your eardrum from bacteria and moisture.

So while your ears don’t sweat in the traditional sense, the ceruminous glands do secrete a fluid similar to sweat. When mixed with sebum and dead skin cells, it forms earwax—which some people notice more after exercise or in hot weather, giving the illusion of sweaty ears.

It’s all part of your body’s quiet, behind-the-scenes maintenance, keeping your ears clean and functional without you even noticing. Pretty clever, right?
