When we think about the Viking 1 mission, most imagine the first successful landing on Mars in 1976. But before it touched down, it had to survive a journey through space—and that meant fitting precisely within the constraints of its launch system. One often overlooked detail is just how tall the spacecraft actually was.

Viking 1 wasn’t a towering structure by today’s standards, but its design was intricate and purpose-built. The central ring-shaped structure, which formed the core of the lander, consisted of eight flat faces. Each face stood at a modest height of 0.4572 meters—just over 18 inches.
