Is PDA More Common in Girls?

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital heart condition where a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus — which normally closes shortly after birth — remains open. While rare in full-term infants, it's notably more frequent in premature babies. Interestingly, PDA is about twice as common in girls as it is in boys. This gender difference has been consistently observed in clinical studies, though the exact reasons aren’t fully understood. Hormonal and developmental factors unique to female infants may play a role.

Often, PDA occurs on its own and resolves with timely treatment, but in some cases, it can be associated with other congenital heart defects. When present alongside conditions like hypoplastic left heart syndrome or coarctation of the aorta, diagnosis and management become more complex. Early detection through heart murmurs, echocardiograms, or routine neonatal screening is crucial, especially in preterm infants who are at higher risk.

Several factors can increase the likelihood of PDA, including certain genetic conditions such as Down syndrome or DiGeorge syndrome. Maternal infections during pregnancy — like rubella — and exposure to specific medications or alcohol can also elevate the risk. Prematurity remains the biggest contributing factor, as the ductus arteriosus is more likely to stay open in underdeveloped cardiovascular systems.

While PDA can pose serious health challenges if left untreated, advances in neonatal care have made it highly manageable. Most children who receive appropriate medical or surgical intervention go on to lead healthy lives. Awareness of the condition’s prevalence in girls and its risk factors helps doctors monitor and treat it more effectively, especially in vulnerable newborn populations.
