Like the vast majority of synthetic plastics and polymers, polyacrylonitrile features a remarkably low rate of biodegradability. Because of this chemical durability, discarded products made from this fiber can persist in the environment for decades—and sometimes centuries—without breaking down naturally.

The primary concern with this material is how it breaks apart over time. Instead of decomposing harmlessly, it often degrades into tiny particles. These fragments accumulate heavily as microfibers in the ocean, harming marine ecosystems, as well as lingering as textile residues trapped in soil and landfills.
