When you pick up a plastic water bottle, a food container, or even a children's toy, chances are you're holding one of the "Big Six" polymers. These materials dominate the world of plastics, making up the vast majority of consumer and industrial products we use daily.
Polyethylene comes in two main forms: high-density (HDPE) and low-density (LDPE). HDPE is sturdy—found in milk jugs and detergent bottles—while LDPE is softer and used in plastic bags and squeezable bottles. And you’ve probably seen polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on recycling labels—clear, strong, and perfect for beverage bottles. What ties all these together? They’re all thermoplastics, meaning they can be heated, melted, and reshaped repeatedly without losing their core properties. This recycling-friendly trait comes from their molecular structure: long polymer chains arranged in tight, orderly patterns that respond predictably to heat.
These six polymers are made from simple hydrocarbons, often derived from oil or natural gas. When processed, they can also interact with substances like fats and oils—useful in packaging applications. Though lightweight and versatile, their widespread use underscores the importance of responsible disposal and recycling.
