The Final Stages of Asbestosis: What to Expect

Asbestosis, a chronic lung disease caused by prolonged asbestos exposure, progresses slowly over decades. In its later stages, the damage to lung tissue becomes irreversible and increasingly debilitating. As scar tissue accumulates, the lungs lose their elasticity, making it harder to breathe—even at rest.

In advanced asbestosis, symptoms intensify significantly. One of the hallmark signs is long-term oxygen deficiency, known as hypoxia. This lack of oxygen can lead to a condition called clubbing of the fingertips, where the tips of the fingers swell and the nails take on a rounded, bulbous appearance. It's a visible clue that the body has been struggling to get enough oxygen over time.

Breathing becomes labored and constant, often requiring supplemental oxygen to maintain basic function. As the lungs fail to deliver oxygen efficiently, the strain extends beyond the respiratory system. The heart is forced to work harder to pump oxygen-poor blood, which can eventually lead to heart failure—particularly right-sided heart failure, also known as cor pulmonale.

Ultimately, respiratory failure may occur, marking the most critical stage of the disease. At this point, the lungs can no longer support the body's need for oxygen or remove carbon dioxide effectively. This stage often requires hospitalization and may involve mechanical ventilation.

While there is no cure for asbestosis, treatments focus on slowing progression, managing symptoms, and improving quality of life. Early detection through regular monitoring—especially for those with a history of asbestos exposure—remains crucial. Though the later stages are severe, supportive care can provide comfort and dignity in the face of this progressive illness.
