Understanding the Long-Term Risks of Untreated PDA

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a condition where a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus, which should close shortly after birth, remains open. While small PDAs may cause little to no issues and often close on their own, a large, untreated PDA can lead to serious long-term complications.

One of the most significant concerns is the development of congestive heart failure. Because the open duct allows extra blood to flow into the lungs, the heart has to work harder over time. This strain can weaken the heart muscle and reduce its efficiency, eventually leading to symptoms like fatigue, difficulty breathing, and poor growth—especially in infants.

Another severe but rare outcome of a long-standing, untreated PDA is Eisenmenger syndrome. This occurs when prolonged high blood flow to the lungs causes irreversible damage to the lung arteries, leading to pulmonary hypertension. Eventually, the pressure forces blood to flow in reverse—from the lungs back into the heart—causing oxygen-poor blood to circulate through the body. At that point, corrective surgery is no longer an option, making early treatment crucial.

Additionally, individuals with PDA face an increased risk of a serious infection known as endarteritis, which is similar to endocarditis. The abnormal blood flow through the PDA can create turbulence, making it easier for bacteria to attach and grow on the vessel lining, potentially leading to life-threatening infections if not treated promptly.

Fortunately, with early detection and proper medical intervention—such as medications, catheter-based procedures, or surgery—most people with PDA can avoid these complications and go on to live healthy lives. Regular follow-up care ensures long-term heart health and peace of mind.
