What Does PSA Stand For—and Why Does It Matter?

When you hear "PSA," it might bring to mind a public service announcement. But in medicine, PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen—a protein produced by both normal and cancerous cells in the prostate gland.

This small protein plays a big role in men’s health, especially when it comes to screening for prostate issues. Doctors often use the PSA test to measure levels of this protein in the blood. While it's commonly associated with prostate cancer, elevated PSA levels don’t automatically mean cancer is present.

Several non-cancerous conditions can also raise PSA levels. For example, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—a common enlargement of the prostate that occurs with age—and prostatitis, which is inflammation of the prostate, can both cause increases. That’s why interpreting PSA results requires context: age, medical history, and other test findings all matter.

Despite its limitations, the PSA test remains a valuable tool. It can help detect prostate cancer early, sometimes before symptoms appear. However, it’s not perfect. False positives can lead to unnecessary anxiety and procedures, while some aggressive cancers may not significantly raise PSA levels.

As of early 2025, discussions around PSA testing continue to evolve. Many experts now recommend shared decision-making between men and their doctors—weighing the pros and cons of screening based on individual risk factors.

So while PSA is just three letters, its meaning carries significant weight. Whether it’s a routine check-up or a deeper health concern, understanding what PSA stands for—and what it can (and can’t) tell you—is an essential part of proactive men’s health care.
