How to Combat Biofilms in the Body

Biofilms are slimy layers formed by colonies of bacteria that stick to surfaces—inside medical devices, on teeth, or even within tissues. These protective shields make infections stubborn and hard to treat. When bacteria hide in a biofilm, they become up to 1,000 times more resistant to standard treatments, which is why some infections just won’t go away.

Antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents are the primary tools used to break down biofilms and eliminate the underlying infection. However, traditional antibiotics often struggle to penetrate the sticky matrix that holds biofilms together. That’s why doctors may prescribe higher doses, longer treatment durations, or combinations of drugs to increase effectiveness. In some cases, specialized antimicrobials designed to disrupt the biofilm structure are used alongside traditional therapies.

Beyond pharmaceuticals, medical procedures sometimes play a role—like removing infected catheters or cleaning dental plaque, which is a common type of biofilm. Researchers are also exploring new approaches, such as enzymes that dissolve biofilm components or probiotics that help crowd out harmful bacteria.

Lifestyle habits matter, too. Good oral hygiene, for example, is a frontline defense against dental biofilms. For chronic infections—such as those linked to cystic fibrosis or recurring urinary tract issues—ongoing management is key. Working closely with a healthcare provider ensures treatment is tailored not just to kill bacteria, but to dismantle the biofilm fortress they build.

While science continues to develop smarter ways to target biofilms, the current strategy remains a mix of strong antimicrobials, physical removal when possible, and preventive care. It’s a reminder that in the body’s microscopic battles, sometimes the toughest enemy isn’t the germ itself—but the shield it builds around itself.
