PSA Levels: Not Just for Men
When people hear "PSA," they often think it's a test only relevant to men, specifically for detecting prostate cancer. And while PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is indeed a crucial marker in men's health, it’s not exclusive to them. Even women have PSA—just in much smaller amounts.
In men, a normal total PSA level is typically 1 ng/ml or less, with a significant increase in prostate cancer risk once levels surpass 10 ng/ml. But in women, the story is different. A healthy woman’s serum contains less than 0.0004 ng/ml of PSA. That’s an incredibly tiny amount, nearly undetectable, but still present.
This trace presence comes from tissues outside the prostate. Though women don’t have a prostate gland, they do have Skene’s glands near the urethra—sometimes called the “female prostate”—which can produce small quantities of PSA. These levels are so low, however, that PSA testing isn’t used as a diagnostic tool in women the way it is in men.
The science behind this subtle but fascinating biological detail shows how our bodies share surprising similarities. While PSA remains a key indicator in men’s health—especially for monitoring prostate cancer—its presence in women highlights the complexity of human physiology. It's a reminder that medical markers aren’t always gender-specific, even if their clinical use is.
So, while a woman won’t get a PSA test during a routine check-up, knowing that her body naturally carries minuscule traces of this protein adds depth to how we understand gender differences in medicine.
