How Is a Patent Ductus Arteriosus Closed?
For many babies, a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)—a small blood vessel that should close shortly after birth—shuts on its own within the first few months of life. This tiny vessel, essential before birth for bypassing the lungs, typically seals up naturally once a newborn starts breathing independently. In these cases, no intervention is needed.
But when the PDA remains open beyond infancy, it can strain the heart and lungs over time, leading to complications. Fortunately, modern cardiology offers a minimally invasive solution. Doctors can close the PDA using a catheter-based procedure, avoiding open-heart surgery in most cases.
Here’s how it works: A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is carefully threaded through blood vessels in the leg, navigating up toward the heart. Once it reaches the PDA, a small closure device—often shaped like a mesh plug or disc—is delivered through the catheter and positioned precisely within the vessel. Over time, the body’s tissue grows around the device, permanently sealing the opening.
This technique is highly effective and typically involves a short hospital stay, minimal discomfort, and a quick recovery. It’s especially beneficial for children and even some adults who weren’t diagnosed until later in life.
