What to avoid before and after anesthesia
Preparing for surgery can feel a bit overwhelming, but following your pre-op instructions carefully is key to keeping you safe and helping your procedure go smoothly. Here are the most important things you need to avoid:
1. Do not eat or drink anything (including water) for 6 hours before your surgery. This is one of the most critical rules. Having anything in your stomach while under anesthesia can lead to serious complications, so it is vital that you follow this fasting window strictly.
2. Do not smoke or drink alcohol for 24 hours prior to surgery. Both smoking and alcohol can interfere with how your body reacts to anesthesia, affect your breathing, and slow down your recovery process.
3. Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery on the same day after surgery. Anesthesia and pain medications stay in your system longer than you might think, severely affecting your reflexes and judgment. Make sure you have a trusted friend or family member lined up to take you home.
4. Do not wear long-sleeve shirts, jeans, or excessive jewelry/makeup. Dressing in loose, comfortable, short-sleeve clothing makes it much easier for medical staff to place IVs, monitor your vital signs, and keep you comfortable. Leave valuables and makeup at home.
Always double-check with your medical team for any specific guidelines tailored directly to your procedure!
