The U.S. president with the highest formal academic degree is Woodrow Wilson (the 28th president).

He is the only U.S. president to have earned a doctorate, receiving a Ph.D. in history and political science from Johns Hopkins University in 1886. Before entering politics and serving as president of Princeton University, Wilson worked as a professor and academic.

While many other presidents have held professional degrees—such as law degrees (J.D.) or an MBA (held by George W. Bush)—Wilson remains the sole commander-in-chief with a Ph.D.
