Understanding Soluble and Insoluble Solids

When you mix a solid into a liquid, its behavior depends entirely on its physical and chemical properties. A substance is described as soluble if it can dissolve completely into a solvent, creating a clear, uniform solution. Common household examples include table salt and sugar, both of which break down into tiny particles when stirred into water, seemingly disappearing into the liquid.

On the other hand, if a solid cannot dissolve, it is classified as insoluble. When you add materials like sand, plastic, or wood chips to water, they remain separate, either floating on top, sinking to the bottom, or leaving the liquid cloudy. Factors such as temperature and agitation can influence how quickly a soluble solid dissolves, but an insoluble material will remain undissolved regardless of how much you stir.
