Who Is the Largest Reinsurance Company in the World?

When it comes to reinsurance, two names consistently dominate the global stage: Swiss Re and Munich Re. As of the end of 2023, Swiss Re took the lead with USD 40.5 billion in gross premiums written (GPW), solidifying its position as the largest reinsurer worldwide by this measure. By the end of 2024, the company reported USD 36.2 billion in reinsurance revenue, further highlighting its massive footprint in the industry.

Yet the ranking hasn’t always favored Swiss Re. Just a year earlier, in the 2022 report based on IFRS 4 accounting standards, Munich Re held the top spot. This back-and-forth underscores how closely matched these two giants are. Both headquartered in Europe—Swiss Re in Zurich and Munich Re in Munich—they’ve long shaped the backbone of global risk management, providing critical capacity to insurers facing natural catastrophes, financial volatility, and increasingly unpredictable climate events.

The shift in leadership reflects not only changing financials but also a transition in reporting standards. With the adoption of IFRS 17, financial transparency in the insurance sector has evolved, impacting how premiums and revenues are recorded. Swiss Re’s current lead may also reflect strategic underwriting focus and strong performance across key markets, including property, casualty, and life reinsurance.

Still, size isn’t everything. Munich Re remains a powerhouse, often leading in innovation and sustainability initiatives. The competition between these two titans drives progress across the industry, benefiting insurers and, ultimately, policyholders around the world.
