Why Insects Hate Diatomaceous Earth

Despite its unassuming appearance, diatomaceous earth is a silent killer for insects. But it’s not a poison. You won’t find toxic ingredients on the label, because it doesn’t work that way. Instead, it uses pure physics and biology to do the job.

Microscopically, diatomaceous earth is made up of fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. When ground into a fine powder, it becomes incredibly abrasive. When insects crawl through it, those sharp microscopic edges scratch and damage their outer shell—the cuticle.

This is where the real trouble begins.

That cuticle isn’t just armor; it’s a protective barrier that locks in moisture. Once diatomaceous earth compromises it, the insect starts to lose vital fats and oils.
