What Doesn’t Dissolve in Water?
Ever stirred sugar into your tea and watched it disappear, but tossed a spoonful of sand into water and noticed it just sinks to the bottom? That’s because not all materials are created equal when it comes to dissolving in water.
Substances that don’t dissolve are called insoluble. Unlike salt or sugar, which break down completely in water, insoluble materials hold their ground—literally. Sand, for instance, may swirl around when mixed, but it won’t vanish. Instead, it settles, unchanged.
Fats, like oil or butter, also resist water’s pull. That’s why salad dressing separates if you don’t shake it—oil and water don’t mix. Wood, too, stays intact when wet, which is why boats made of timber don’t dissolve after a day on the lake. Of course, prolonged exposure can lead to rot, but that’s a biological process, not dissolving.
Metals such as iron, copper, or aluminum don’t dissolve in water under normal conditions. They might corrode over time—like rust on a nail—but the metal itself doesn’t vanish into the liquid. And then there’s plastic: a modern-day staple that famously refuses to break down in water, contributing to pollution in oceans and rivers.
Understanding what dissolves—and what doesn’t—helps explain everyday phenomena, from cooking to environmental science. While water is often called the “universal solvent” because it dissolves so many things, it’s not all-powerful. Some materials, by their very nature, stand firm against it.
So next time you wash your hands or clean a greasy pan, remember: water can do a lot, but even it has its limits.
